Clear glass looks simple, but it exposes every detail of forming, annealing and packing. A useful wholesale specification must distinguish normal pressed-glass characteristics from defects that affect safety, filling, decoration or retail appearance.
Inspect the rim first
The rim affects handling, lid fit and visual quality. Check for chips, cracks, sharp points and excessive waviness. If a lid is included, test it across samples from different cartons. The agreed rim diameter and flatness tolerance should be written into the drawing.
Review the base and stability
A thick base creates visual weight, but it must sit flat. Place samples on a known flat surface and check for rocking. Review base thickness from several directions because optical distortion can make variation difficult to judge from one photograph.
Define acceptable bubbles and marks
Small bubbles and optical waves can occur in pressed glass. The purchase order should define acceptable size, quantity, position and viewing conditions rather than using terms such as “perfect” or “high quality.” Any crack, sharp defect or foreign material sealed in the glass should be treated separately from minor cosmetic variation.
| Area | Inspection question |
|---|---|
| Rim | Is it smooth, level and within lid-fit tolerance? |
| Wall | Are bubbles and waves within the approved limit? |
| Base | Does the jar sit flat and show consistent visual weight? |
| Inside | Is the cavity clean and suitable for filling? |
| Surface | Are scratches visible under the agreed lighting? |
Check dimensions and capacity
Measure height, opening diameter, body diameter, weight and usable capacity on a sample set. One jar does not represent a production batch. If the jar is used on an automated filling line, share the line tolerances before approving the order.
Use the correct sample for candle testing
Burn testing must use production-equivalent glass with the intended wax, fragrance, wick and fill level. The jar manufacturer supplies the container; the finished candle producer remains responsible for validating the complete system.
Protect clear glass during shipment
Clear surfaces show scuffs easily. Approve bags, sleeves, dividers and carton arrangement using a packed sample. Inspect jars after a vibration or handling trial, not only before packing.
