Soda Lime Glass Vs Borosilicate Glass: A Practical Comparison for Buyers

Choosing between soda-lime glass and borosilicate glass is one of the decisions that gets made quickly and regretted slowly. The two options solve the same problem in fundamentally different ways, and the right answer depends on what you are optimising for.

We manufacture pressed glass — which means we produce the soda-lime glass option ourselves. We do not make borosilicate glass. That is worth stating plainly, because the most useful part of this comparison is knowing which side of the table we are on.

The short answer

For pressed candle jars and drinking glassware, soda-lime is the right answer. Borosilicate costs roughly two to three times more and is unnecessary outside lab and heat-critical use.

Where the two differ

Factor soda-lime glass borosilicate glass
Composition Sodium calcium silicate. The standard for pressed and blown container glass. Boron silicate. Higher heat and chemical resistance.
Cost Low. This is the reason pressed soda-lime dominates home fragrance. High. Typically 2–3× soda-lime for comparable formats.
Heat resistance Adequate for standard container candles and normal domestic use. Superior. Rated for direct flame, boiling and thermal shock.
Typical use Candle jars, drinking glass, cosmetic and food packaging. Laboratory glassware, bakeware, high-temp applications.

The factors that decide it

Why soda-lime wins for candles

A container candle generates modest heat. Soda-lime handles it comfortably. Paying borosilicate premiums on thousands of units for heat resistance you do not need is straightforward waste.

Where borosilicate becomes necessary

If your application involves direct flame contact, rapid temperature change, or laboratory-grade measurement, borosilicate is not optional. Candle making, laboratory and pharmacy are the three cases we see it required.

The recycled cullet question

Soda-lime container glass is widely recycled from post-consumer sources. This is a genuine sustainability argument that borosilicate does not share as cleanly.

What buyers often ask

Whether food-grade certification applies. Soda-lime glass can be certified food grade; ask the supplier for the specific declaration covering your application rather than a generic statement.

What buyers tell us after the fact

The most common pattern we see: buyers start with the cheaper option, discover the hidden costs in year one, and move to the more durable one. If you have a repeat order cycle rather than a one-off promotion, the durability question decides the outcome more often than the unit price does.

The other common pattern is buyers who committed to glass for a range that was never suited to it, then had to re-tool. If your product is fundamentally refill, reuse or disposal-driven, changing container is a product decision, not a packaging decision.

How to evaluate any supplier on this

  1. Ask for the specification, not the photograph. Brimful volume, usable volume, mouth diameter, unit weight, glass type.
  2. Ask who made the mould. A manufacturer with its own tool room controls wall thickness. A trader accepts whatever the press gives them.
  3. Ask for the decoration durability answer in writing. Screen print, kiln-fired decal and adhesive label are three very different products.
  4. Ask for packing detail. 48 pcs per carton is our standard export configuration. Broken glass in transit is paid for once and never again.

If this format matches what you are looking at, request a quotation. We reply with pricing, lead time and packing detail — no obligation, and we will tell you honestly if your volume does not suit a particular format.
